Advertising strategies!
So it’s not enough to have an internet presence. We know this. And unless you believe only in computer-glow tans, you know this, too. So the staff at HOOT has recently been brainstorming ways to get our presence know across the city of Philadelphia (our local stomping ground) in a more in-your-face sort of way.
I can’t recall whether this was Dorian or Amanda’s idea, but it goes...
A sample of what goes on at our Wednesday Workshop
So we’re already told you that we’ve got a chatroom that happens here from 8-9.30 on Wednesday night where you can bring your writing to be critiqued by editors Dorian and Amanda (and sometimes interns James and Janie, too).
But what can you expect?
Here’s a sample of something that happened at one of our recent chatrooms using Melissa’s poem, “Beer” :

HOOT's visit to the Philly 'Zine Fest
Apologies to all for the lack of updates this week— there’s been a lot going on. I’ll be better in future, I promise!
Anyways, last week Janie, Janie’s excellent boyfriend Zack, and I attended the Philly ‘Zine Fest, an awesome event in it’s ninth year that was held at the Rotunda on Walnut in Philadelphia.
You can read an article I wrote about it for the blog...
Why should writers pay the $2 fee to try to be...
Amanda, co-editor of HOOT, has come up with a fairly comprehensive response covering our bases as to why we’ve decided to charge $2 each time an author submits their work for consideration to HOOT.
Yes, it’s a little unorthodox. But all the more reason you should read her logic as to why we do it!
1) Traditional submissions to literary magazines are by mail. That means paying for...
Workshop/critique party tonight!
A reminder to our Tumblr readers that we’re having an online workshop in a chatroom tonight from 8-9.30 EST. You don’t need to be there exactly on time at 8, but be there sometime before 9 so we have enough time to talk about your work!
In order to access our chatroom, go to our website http://hootreview.com/workshops/ and click next to where it says “Chatroom (click...
How is your magazine different than a writing...
As answered by Amanda Vacharat, co-editor of HOOT:
Great question. It is different for a variety of reasons. First, there are no “winners” and “losers”; if we select a piece for publication, it is because we thought it would work well in our postcard format, that we could do something with it visually. There is no sense, either implicit or explicit, that work chosen by us is somehow “better”...
Why use a postcard format?
This time, it’s co-editor Dorian Geisler’s turn to explain some of the reasoning behind why HOOT looks the way it does.
Well, there is a mystique, a little bit, about snail mail. I mean, the fact that it is delivered by hand, passing through so many different vehicles and messengers, makes it seem special (though obviously wasteful if done to excess). Also, there is a certain...
Where did the title HOOT come from?
An excellent question, with an excellent response from co-Editor Amanda Vacharat!
Well, we just wanted something short and catchy. And the idea of having an owl icon appealed to us. But really, we’re glad that there is something of a Twitter reference there: both “twitter” and “hoot” are sounds that birds make. And there is something about bird calls … a bird’s call is brief,...
